Cats looking for a job: working (barn) cats

Looking for a cat to help with a mouse problem? We have some working cats who would love to help you out! These cats might never want to be your friend, but they will gladly help take care of those pesky mice in your barn. Some might warm up, but many would prefer to just live their lives near humans, not necessarily ever wanting attention.

Requirements:

  • Warm, safe place to live (barns are great!)
  • Regular food
  • Vet visits as needed
  • A permanent home (we do NOT loan out cats)

We only allow certain cats to be adopted as working cats, but all of them will be:

  • Spayed or neutered
  • Up to date on vaccinations

Acclimation process:
They will need to be confined for at least 2 weeks. This shows them that this is where they will be fed. Keeping them in the barn or shop they will live in is great! If this is an open space, a large crate is a good way to do this.

If you are interested, you can fill out the cat adoption application on our website and note you are interested in a working or barn cat in your description of your ideal cat. Selecting a particular cat is not required.

*Note: we are NOT typically fans of letting cats outside! We much prefer them to be safe indoors. Cats are also an absolute menace to wildlife, so limiting the number of cats allowed outside is ideal. Taking care of a mouse problem is one thing, but cats don’t hunt just to eat, so they can decimate wildlife populations, especially when there are a lot of them. Our working cats are just not suited for being indoor cats. For more information about why we aren’t a fan of letting cats outside, check out our blog post Curiosity can kill the outdoor cat
